Duo and NoRules are now Closed

The Duo and NoRules servers are now closed for the foreseeable future. I've backed them up and now they're gone. If I see enough donations come in I'll resurrect one or both of them, but until then I now only (!) run PvP, PvE, and Solo servers as the 3 most popular of the 5 servers I used to run.

Here's to the future folks.

Just a reminder that Duo and NoRules will be deactivated at some point in the next 48 hours. It might be 1 hour, it might be 48, but they are going.

New PvE Server is up and Running

The new PvE server is up and running. Expect some teething problems as even though I've set the server salt (resource generation) the same as the old server, something isn't quite right when I was testing the new one last night. Player placed Quarries were only producing stone and PumpJacks weren't producing anything. If it's still doing it (I haven't checked as I write this), then it probably wont get fixed until next wipe on 4th February.

And everything is as it should be, no lag or rubberbanding either.

Everything else looks okay apart from the PlayRust.io map generation. I've raised a support ticket with the new host about that.

If you see any other bugs, then please add them to the #bugs channel in Discord.

You can find the link to join the new server on the Rust Servers page.

We’re Moving IPs – Again

Next Thursday 28th January we're moving IP addresses and ports. I'm just not getting enough donations to warrant a dedicated server (in Germany via Hetzner) and the 100+euros each month that it costs. That service has been cancelled and terminates on the 2nd Feb.

Instead, I'm moving to 3 different game panel type hosts which are quite a lot cheaper for some reason, but I lose the substantial benefit (to me) of a Windows server to run Rust on (and a few other game servers). Swings and roundabouts. People who have been around for a while will have noticed that the server slots have already been reduced to 47 in preparation for this.

You will have also realised from reading the above that there are currently 5 Rust servers and I'm moving to 3, so what servers are going? Duo and either NoRules or Clans server, I havent for sure decided yet, but it will probably be NoRules. None of those 3 servers get much interest any more.

That means we will be left with the ever popular PvE server, the Solo server (which has a hard core of regulars) and a PvP server. All servers are currently located in Germany, but I'm moving them to the UK where I live. From personal experience, if you're a euro player you won't notice any difference in gameplay whatsoever.

I will lease the new servers on Tuesday 26th, configure them, and then on Thursday 28th we'll have a short period of close down (an hour or two at most) while I migrate the game saves to the new servers and do any tweaks I find need doing.

When this happens you will likely have to use F1 and connect to the new servers manually. Once they're in your history, you can favourite them within Rust. I'll also provide direct Steam links on the Rust server page together with links to the new Rust maps on PlayRust.io.

It hasn't missed my attention that since I moved to the Hetzner server in March 2020 it marked the fall off of donations. I'm hoping that by moving back to UK servers I'll see the player base increase and also the number of donations. If after 3-4 months there have been no increase in donations then it might be time to shut up shop, or at least mothball everything. It's been a blast, but I can't afford to keep paying for the servers out of my own pocket.

Crafting Changes on All Rust Servers

Due to changes in two of the crafting plugins we use and a lack of confidence in the devs to fix an issue with them in a timely manner, I've had to reluctantly make the decision to change the way crafting is handled.

As you may or may not know, I've never liked instant crafting because it makes the game too easy and offers no incentive for players to continue playing during a wipe. For this reason, I've always preferred Zlevels and a fast and steady progression to better crafting times - just 2-4 hours on the server crafting things and you'd be at top level with near instant crafting.

However due to FacePunch making the vanilla game very grindy to achieve anything (the 7 Days To Die devs are also very guilty of this), and a problem between Zlevels and Crafting Controller that will likely never get resolved, I've been forced to make changes. I'm not totally happy about it but it should make life about the same for players. Maybe slightly better, maybe slightly worse.

Effectively immediately, crafting has been removed from Zlevels, and now all items can be crafted in one tenth of their vanilla times with a few exceptions that I've listed below.

I'm sorry if you're not happy about this (neither am I) but I've tried to be as fair as possible in making these changes.

Here are the exceptions, all times in seconds, all times are the same as vanilla Rust. This is to try to slow down raiding a little.

  • ammo.rocket.basic - craftTime: 10.0
  • ammo.rocket.fire - craftTime: 10.0
  • ammo.rocket.hv - craftTime: 10.0
  • explosive.satchel - craftTime: 30.0
  • explosive.timed - craftTime: 30.0
  • ammo.rifle.explosive - craftTime: 3.0
  • explosives - craftTime: 5.0
  • gunpowder - craftTime: 2.0

We’re Changing IP Address

We're not just changing IPs, we're changing hardware too. The old machine had 64GB RAM, whereas the new box has 256GB RAM. I can only think this was a mistake at the datacenter as it was the same price as the new 64GB boxes. Yay.

We still need donations of course (running servers is expensive in both money and time), which you can do on the donate page.

The IP address of all the servers will now be 46.4.61.171, and you can get to the Steam Connect links on the Rust Servers page.

When the wipe happens tonight, the old Rust severs will go offline and the new ones will take effect. You'll need to search for GameKeeper in the modded section of the ingame browser, and then add them to your favourites.

I've also unbanned everyone who has ever been banned. It's a fresh start for everyone. We'll see what happens.

If you play up, you WILL get banned. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Stack Sizes Massively Increased

There's a noteworthy change happening to all the servers - aside from all the usual updates and tweaks done on a daily basis.

At some point in the last 12+ months while I've been away ill, the stack sizes have gone back to what appears to be default vanilla sizes. This was never the intention, and I'm not really sure how it's happened. Sometimes a new version of a plugin will wipe the existing config, and maybe that's what's happened in this case. Nobody reported it to us (AFAIK), so none of the admins knew to go in and fix it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now I've spotted it, I've done a quick amendment so that most stack sizes are now set at 500,000 - yep that's stacks of half a million, just like it used to be. Now, it's very likely that at some point I WILL change certain items such as charcoal, sulfur, ammunition, explosives, etc, to a reduced amount while carrying them, and I'll amend some containers so that stack sizes are limited inside them, but until I get around to doing that, enjoy the globally increased stack sizes.

Faster Crafting is Back on GameKeeper

I recently discovered (just after the last wipe) that while I've been away ill last year, instant crafting had been enabled on all the servers. Now I know it's matter of personal choice, but it's been something I've always been against as I see it as fundamentally wrong to the game of Rust.

We all have our opinions...

There were a few words amongst the admins, and I got a bit quietly salty and threw all my toys out of the pram. Then I disabled instant crafting on all but PvE. Eventually I calmed down as I can see we're all correct in our opinions and that faster crafting IS something everybody wants (me too). I've just never agreed with the idea that it should be handed out to everyone for nothing. I've always believed that progression through levelling up to get faster crafting is the way to go. But early game can be a real pain while you're waiting for that to happen, and let's face it, these aren't vanilla servers so why be faced with vanilla crafting times?

With that in mind, I've set general crafting to a fifth of whatever its vanilla Rust crafting time is, with a few exceptions. For example, early game, who wants to wait 60 seconds (or even 12) for a tool cupboard to craft? That's now insta. I'll add some more as I think of them and as I get suggestions, but I only see early game items as needing to be insta. Once you do enough crafting and hit Crafting Level 20, everything is insta. With a few exceptions.

Hopefully this compromise (thanks for suggesting that, legleg) will make everyone happy.

All this is ONLY on the PvP servers, PvE remains instant crafting.

In life, I've found that good things often come from bad things, and so something good has come from this. When the time is right I'll make an announcement about what that is. 😉

Two New Teleport Commands Added

We've added two new "Town Teleport" commands to all the Rust servers.

These work instantly to teleport you and there's no cooldown period or limit so you can use them as much as you like. We may add limits if we feel they're being abused.

/ttb ~ Teleports you to the Bandit Camp.

/tto ~ Teleports you to the Outpost.

You can see these, plus all the other player commands on the Rust commands page.
